Christmas in Hawaii

Merry Christmas.

Kress Camacho Wedding

Our cousin, Joy Kress, was married on December 23, 2011 at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base.  The ceremony took place on a cliff between two officer’s homes overlooking North Beach, where the bride and groom, Gabe Camacho, met.  Below are a few unofficial photos.

Bodysurfing Waimea Bay

On Sunday we went back to the North Shore to swim/bodysurf and have a picnic at Waimea Bay.  No, the point wasn’t breaking (Eddie) but the waves on the shore were.  It can definitely be a dangerous place to play.  Above is my takeoff thru getting barreled — as the late Andy Irons would say, it’s a kiss from God.  BTW, after I pulled the camera out no one else wanted to get in the water so I was the only one to get pics.  Sure would like a water housing for my 5D!  Image made with the Diptic App, learn more here.

Billabong Pipe Masters

Elisha and I just got back from the Billabong Pipe Masters (Day 1) on the North Shore.  Below is our favorite wave of the day — surfed by John John Florence at Banzai Pipeline. Waves ranged from 10-20 feet, with some faces closing out at 30 feet. Pics to come…

Keurig Coffee Machine

Elisha and I recently purchased a Keurig Coffee Machine for our Uncle Conrad.  Truth be told when I first learned about Keurig I was turned off by how simple and easy it was to brew coffee.  There’s no way anything good could be this fast and still be an excellent cup of coffee.  I was wrong… here is why Keurig is the future of coffee:

  1. Personalize your coffee one cup at a time.
  2. Hundreds of coffees to choose from (top name brands).
  3. Ready to go in less than 2 minutes.
  4. Virtually nothing to clean (cycle every 90 days with vinegar/water).
  5. Good for the family (makes coffee, tea and hot cocoa).
  6. Well priced machine, around $150.
  7. About $1 per coffee… cheaper than you know who.
  8. Available filter for non-pod use (see below).
  9. Timer for “coffee when you wake”.
  10. No measuring needed!

Just a few of the many coffees available for Keurig.  For a complete listing of coffee visit here.  And if you are in the mood for some fresh whole bean Kona Coffee you can grind and put it in the “My K-Cup” which allows you to use the Keurig with your own coffee.

So, how does it work?  Once you place a K-Cup (coffee pod) in the Keurig machine it punctures two holes in the cup.  One in the top, for hot water to enter — and the second hole in the bottom to let the coffee out and into your cup.  There is actually a filter within the cup, very similar to a traditional coffee system.  After use (the model we are using) just eject/remove the K-Cup and throw away… no cleaning, no mess.  If you are looking for the PERFECT GIFT this Christmas Season (and they drink coffee) a Keurig is the way to go.

Now That You’ve Quit

Tonight I opened up my Harvard Business Review App and hit “random tip” — below is what popped up. Thought it was appropriate — love the part about “riding the wave”.

How To Survive Now That You’ve Quit

Anyone currently on the job market will tell you now may not be the ideal time to leave the safety and security of your job. However, many are using the sharp focus of the recession to see more clearly what really matters to them and some, as crazy as it seems, are choosing to leave their jobs to pursue different interests. If you are ready to leave, keep these three things in mind:

Focus on the work, not the paycheck. You left your job because it wasn’t satisfying. Don’t ruin your new-found freedom by stressing daily over the finances. Enjoy the work you have chosen to do.

Learn, learn, learn. Any new experience gives you the opportunity to learn — take note of the valuable lessons you gain and where possible, share what you’re learning with others.

Ride the wave. Be prepared for a bumpy ride with many ups and downs. Enjoy the highs of the ups and remember to laugh when you’re down.

Today’s Management Tip was adapted from “Leaving Your Job in Tough Times: Swim, Sink, Swim” by Steven DeMaio.

@treehouse job posting

Love this job posting from Treehouse.com, a online tutorial site teaching you design, development and iOS (from beginning to end).  I love the simplicity and specificity… no games here.  Also, $5K in office stuff — sweet.  Do you think the 4 day work week is still 40 hrs (I bet they work more because they love it)?  Happy employees = great results, right?  Treehouse the service costs $25-$50 per month… but I assume would be well worth the money if you can learn as much/fast as you want.  One last point, can anyone list the 26 paid holidays?

We’re looking for talented designers and developers who have a passion for teaching. If you love helping people understand your craft, and feel comfortable on camera then we’d like to hear from you. Please send a 3-minute tutorial video on a subject of your choice. The first 30-seconds should be a head-and-shoulder shot of yourself introducing the tutorial and the rest should be a screencast.

Please send your video to hello@teamtreehouse.com along with a little bit about yourself.

Our benefits include a 4-day week, 26 days of paid holiday, good pay, catered lunches, $5000 for your office hardware, Aeron chair, full medical/dental healthcare coverage and 100% retirement contribution matching up to 6% of your pay. We’ll take good care of you :)
